Rosemaling Class by Gladys Shelley Offered

The Isanti County Historical Society is offering an 8-week rosemaling class beginning Saturday, February 6 at the ICHS Heritage Center. Instructor Gladys Shelley will teach students the art of Norwegian rosemaling in oils from 9:00-Noon.

Gladys is noted for her European and American folk art painting and brings extensive experience to her classes, having studied abroad and in the U.S. with artists from Norway and Sweden. Gladys' detailed biography can be seen on the Minnesota Folk Artists Directory at http://mnfolkarts.org/gladys/gladys.html.

This class will accommodate new rosemaling students, as well as past rosemaling students who may want to "brush up" or "add" to their skills. Don't miss this rare opportunity to study under Gladys Shelley and benefit from her experience in Norwegian rosemaling.

The class fee is $120, plus materials of $100. This is a wonderful opportunity to study with a world-renowned artist, while still staying close-to-home. Comparable classes with instructors of this caliber often require expenses in travel, lodging, meals, plus time away from home.

A registration form for this class is available by calling ICHS at 763-689-4229. Hours are M, T & TH from 9:00am to 4:30pm.

Pushing Up Daisies Exhibit Opens

p4b-1_hearse

One of many photos in the "Pushing Up Daisies Exhibit" is that of the NE Anderson Funeral Home hearse in Braham. C.1918

An Exhibit Opening is scheduled for Saturday, October 17, from
10:00-4:00 p.m. at the Isanti County Historical Society Heritage Center
for "Pushing Up Daisies: Customs of Death in Isanti County Through The
Ages." Over the years, as with everything else, the traditions and
customs associated with death have evolved. We invite you to attend with
your spouse, children, grandchildren, and friends to view the exhibit
and enjoy refreshments.

In 2007 ICHS acquired a unique artifact--a wicker removal basket. I will
bet that very few folks have ever seen a basket this large or unique.
This basket is about six feet in length and has a removable cover. It
was used (circa unknown) to remove a deceased body from the place of
death (usually the home) to the mortuary. This basket is the largest
item in our current exhibit which opened Monday, October 5.

Included are some of the most popular euphemisms about death, famous
last words, photos of death masks (which not everyone have even heard
of), plus photos of tombstones and death carriages, a.k.a. hearses.

SWEDGEN ROAD TOUR 2009
Have you hit a brick wall in your Swedish research or don’t know where to begin? The Isanti County Historical Society is sponsoring SWEDGEN 2009 Research Day on October 15 at the Isanti County Historical Society Heritage Center. A group of Swedish genealogists will be touring the United States this autumn to teach and assist Swedish-Americans in how to find their roots, how to do Swedish research and learn more about their heritage.

The group will lead a Swedish genealogy research day that will include presentations on Swedish genealogical online resources, Swedish genealogical CDs and Swedish emigration, and demonstrations on how to use various resources for Swedish genealogical and historical research.

The tour participants will assist individuals with their personal research and will have access to Swedish online and CD genealogical resources including resources specific to regional areas such as Kalmar, Kronoberg, Jönköping, Halland, Jämtland and Stockholm. In addition the group will have access to the Dalslandproject (70,000 names from Dalsland including emigrants), index of names for the Swedish American churches and additional names of emigrants not yet included in the Emibas CD. The Swedish tour participants will be Anneli Andersson, Anna-Lena Hultman, Charlotte Börjesson, Jan Eurenius and Olof Cronberg. Kathy Meade, the U.S. representative for Genline, will also be accompanying the group. Biographies for each Swedish tour participant are available by contacting the Isanti County Historical Society at 763-689-4229.

Two workshops are scheduled—1:00-4:00 p.m. and 6:00-10:00p.m. The fee for advanced registration is $30, with a discount for ICHS members. Each registered participant is entitled to ½-hour of private research consultation, which must be reserved prior to the session.

The SWEDGEN 2009 Research Day will be a great opportunity to get help with your Swedish genealogical  research and get past the brick walls and challenges you have encountered doing family research.

ICE CREAM SOCIAL TO DEDICATE SPENCER BROOK SCHOOLHOUSE RESTORATION
Completion of the year-long restoration of the historic Spencer Brook Schoolhouse will be celebrated on SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 13, 2009, from 1:00pm to 4:00pm. A short dedication program is planned, culminating in the installation of a time capsule. Everyone is invited to tour the school and to enjoy this event at no charge.  In addition, Spencer Brook United Methodist Church will conduct a concurrent Bake Sale and will have the church open to the public to display historic items.

The Spencer Brook community was the largest settlement of native-born Americans in Isanti County by 1858. In 1868, several area families each subscribed enough money (from $ .30 to $1.50) to open a school, with the help of the Isanti County treasurer. It was the first school in Isanti County to conduct classes solely in English and reflects the thriving community at that time. By 1945, when the school finally closed its doors, approximately 500 students had passed through the school under the instruction of 74 teachers. In 1980, the Schoolhouse was placed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Fast forward 141 years to 2008 when the acquisition of a matching grant from the Minnesota Historical Society, donations from Isanti County, private parties and the community at large, and fundraising efforts from the Spencer Brook Sesquicentennial Festival of 2008 made the schools’ restoration possible. The remodeling started at the foundation and worked to the top of the bell tower, from the outside to the inside, and front to back. This little school is a living example of school days from the “not too distant past”. There are many members of Spencer Brook’s present-day community that were educated in this or a similar school, and they are invited to attend and have the afternoon to reminisce. If you have never seen a one-room school, here's your chance.

If you have questions about this event or want to become involved in on-going preservation of the Spencer Brook Schoolhouse through the activities of the Spencer Brook Historical Association, please contact the Isanti County Historical Society.
