History of ICHS

As the story goes, Isanti County Historical Society was born one evening around the kitchen table in Braham. Did the vision those five women have that night in November 1964 encompass how it has grown today?

At over 200 members, the Isanti County Historical Society now occupies a building of its own, a far step up from its first small museum housed in the old Braham Covenant Church building. That museum was small and dank. There was no heat in the wintertime, and in the spring the basement would flood, remembers Isanti County Historical Society’s first curator Marilyn McGriff. Its displays were open to the public only occasionally, typically on a Friday afternoon when a volunteer was available to staff it. The focal point was a 1970 parlor with a grand piano and settee.

Mostly, the building was a collection point and McGriff spent one-half day a week at the pay rate of $7 per hour organizing and registering the society’s various artifacts. “I would find dead bats and squirrels sometimes,” she recalled. “It was so creepy in there.”

Three Leaders

Over the past 45 years, the Isanti County Historical Society has been led by three women: Marilyn McGriff from 1976 to 1989, Valorie Arrowsmith from 1989 to 2002 and Kathy McCully from 2003 to present.

Heritage Center

Kathy McCully came on board as the society fulfilled the dream of many by moving into its own home. The Heritage Center, which was designed by former board member Gunilla Hill, resembles a Swedish Farmstead. It is located on 5 acres in the northwest corner of the Isanti County Fairgrounds. The center was built specifically to house the Isanti County Historical Society collections and historical records. It also serves as a meeting place for all interested in the history of our country and state.

Portions of the 1st phase of the building plan (offices, foyer, museum/exhibit area, meeting room/library, restrooms) were ready for occupancy in February 2003. Four years later, the museum/community hall, kitchen and collection storage area were completed. Additions to the heritage center will be completed in two more phases in the future.

Other buildings on the site include an 1870s Pioneer Log Cabin,a workshop/ storage facility for our present and future accessions, and the Olson summer kitchen.

A secure donation can be made on-line to help pay off the Heritage Center mortgage.
