Looking for unique experiences for your children this summer that are close to home and that will not break your budget? The Isanti County Historical Society has three summer programs that fit this bill to a tee!

Old Time School at West Riverside School is now taking reservations for the last two weekly sessions beginning June 27. Held from 9:00-1:00 p.m. for grades 1-8, students attend class as if it were 1900. Cost is $50 per student ($40 if parent or grandparent is a member of ICHS). Contact Karen Lood at 763-689-2830 for availability.

Swedish Language & Culture Camp will be held August 15-19 from 9:30-Noon. at the West Riverside School. Campers, ages 5-13 (must have completed Kindergarten) will have lessons in Swedish language & culture trough food, crafts, stories, songs, games and folk dance. Taught by instructors Valorie Arrowsmith and Kathy Olson, classes and activities are held in a log cabin (built by Swedish immigrants from Jämtland in 1859) and the West Riverside School (a one-room schoolhouse from 1898). Registration is $55 per student ($45 if parent or grandparent current member of ICHS).

Pre-School Swedish Language and Culture Camp is offered August 16-18, 9-12:30 a.m., open to ages 4 and 5 (must be toilet trained). Registration is $40 per student ($30 if parent or grandparent current member of ICHS).

Pioneer School at the recently restored Spencer Brook School is now taking reservations for their first-ever session held August1-5. Lessons & Carols

Attend Lessons & Carols on Sunday, January 9, 2011 at St. John’s Lutheran Church of Bradford. The 4:00 p.m. service is oriented toward the entire family. Readings are presented by the children, and this service is an excellent example of an old-time Christmas service. Both services conclude by singing Silent Night in the glow of candlelight. Hot-spiced apple cider, coffee, Christstollen and German cookies are served. EVERYONE—young and old—will get their very own Christmas goodie bag filled with treats to take home after each program.

St. John’s Lutheran Church of Bradford is one of ten National Register historic sites in Isanti County, and provides the ideal backdrop for transporting everyone back into time on this special Sunday afternoon. The church is a small wooden structure which seats at best 60 people. It is heated by a wood stove and lit by restored Coleman chandeliers which hang from the ceiling. The restored pump organ melodies are accompanied by button accordion refrains while the hymns and sung in both German and English.

Historic St. John’s (German) Lutheran Church of Bradford is located at 900 Co. Rd. 5 NW, Isanti, just 2 and one half miles west of US Hwy 65 on Co. Rd. 5 NW. A suggested $5.00 per adult donation will assist with the expenses of the day, as well as the on-going restoration of this historic building. See more about St. John's by clicking here.
