BOARD MEMBERS

REPORTS TO: Board president

LENGTH OF TERM: 3 years (unless otherwise specified) with a maximum of
two 3-year terms

MAJOR DUTIES:
• Establish overall long-range and short-term goals.
• Oversee policy and direction.
• Assist with the leadership and general promotion of the Isanti County
Historical Society.
• Support the organization’s vision, mission and needs.

TIME COMMITMENT:
• 5 hours a month – attending one regular board meeting and committee
meeting(s), and preparing for those meetings.
• More time as needed to prepare for and attend events.

EXPECTATIONS:
• Attend specific events including (but not limited to)
- Annual meeting each spring
- Annual retreat each spring
• Be well informed on issues.
• Review meeting agenda prior to meeting and arrive prepared.
• Be an ICHS member and keep membership current.
• Financially support organization.
• Participate in fundraising.
• Serve on at least one committee.
• Volunteer in the office.
• Be present at society events and fundraisers.
• Attend all regular meetings, missing no more than a maximum of 3 a year.
• Be passionate about ICHS.

BOARD PRESIDENT

REPORTS TO: Board

LENGTH OF TERM: 2 years with a maximum of 4 consecutive years

MAJOR DUTIES:
• Chair meetings
• Fashion monthly agenda and distribute in a timely manner.
• Meet with Executive Director regularly to discuss issues concerning the organization.
• Schedule annual retreat in the fall to review progress and set goals.
• Arrange annual visits to sites.
• Formally evaluate performance of organization in achieving its mission.
• Organize annual evaluation of Executive Director.
• Play a leading role in fundraising activities.
• Monitor the integrity of the board’s governance.
• Orient new board members.
• Chair annual meeting each spring.
• Update succession plan annually.

TIME COMMITMENT:
• 3.5 hours a month – attending one regular board meeting  and committee meeting(s),
• 1-3 hours a month preparing agenda for meetings.
• 1-20 hours a month planning and carrying out events as needed.

EXPECTATIONS:
• Serve as chief volunteer of organization.
• Provide leadership to the Board of Directors, who set the policy and to whom the Executive Director is accountable to.
• Refrain from micromanaging.
• Treat fellow board members, staff, volunteers and members with respect.
• Be passionate about the organization.
• Be a member of the board of directors.

VICE PRESIDENT

REPORTS TO: Board & Board President

LENGTH OF TERM: 2 years with a maximum of 4 consecutive years

MAJOR DUTIES:
• Chair meetings when President is absent.
• Work closely with the chair and other staff.
• Meet with President and Executive Director regularly to discuss issues concerning the organization.
• Play a leading role in fundraising activities.
• Monitor the integrity of the board’s governance.

TIME COMMITMENT:
• 3.5 hours a month – attending one regular board meeting  and committee meeting(s)
• 1-2 hours a month preparing for meetings.
• 1-2 hours a month meeting with Board Chair and Executive Director.
• 1-20 hours a month planning and carrying out events as needed.

EXPECTATIONS:
• Provide leadership to the Board of Directors, who set the policy and to whom the Executive Director is accountable to.
• Refrain from micromanaging.
• Treat fellow board members, staff, volunteers and members with respect.
• Be passionate about the organization.
• Likely to serve next as president.
• Be a member of the board of directors.

BOARD SECRETARY

REPORTS TO: Board & Board President

LENGTH OF TERM: 1 year with a maximum of 3 consecutive years

MAJOR DUTIES:
• Take minutes of each regular and special board meeting.
• Ensure minutes are distributed to members by the next regular meeting.
• Ensure effective management of organization’s records.
• Monitor the integrity of the board’s governance.

TIME COMMITMENT:
• 3.5 hours a month – attending one regular board meeting  and committee meeting(s).
• 1 hour a month preparing for meetings.
• 1-2 hours preparing minutes.

EXPECTATIONS:
• Keep accurate records.
• Distribute minutes on a timely basis (by the next meeting).
• Be a member of the board of directors.
• Be passionate about the organization.

BOARD TREASURER

REPORTS TO: Board & Board President

LENGTH OF TERM: 1 year with a maximum of 3 consecutive years

MAJOR DUTIES:
• Review financial reports and distribute them to board.
• Serve on the finance committee.
• Assist the Executive Director in fashioning annual budget.
• Provide the signature of the board necessasry for legal business transactions.

TIME COMMITMENT:
• 3.5 hours a month – attending one regular board meeting  and committee meeting(s).
• 1 hour a month preparing for meetings.
• 1-2 hours reviewing financial reports.

EXPECTATIONS:
• Keep accurate records.
• Distribute minutes on a timely basis (by the next meeting).
• Be a member of the board of directors.
• Be passionate about the organization.
